OBSERVATION IN THE SWAMP “GABRIEL Y GALAN”

We are now going to begin the detailed description of a UFO observation that we consider to be of the highest interest, since it is highly significant if we consider the large amount of data and positive elements that occur in it and that make it worthy of being had into account, in the opinion of the writer, in any serious, in-depth and objective study of the phenomenon that we are so eager and interested in elucidating.

It is about what happened on the night of March 26–27, 1970 in a remote and lonely area of the Extremadura province of Cáceres. Properly speaking, the observation took place on the 27th, since it began at 00:30 in the morning, although it is easily understandable that the main witness of it sometimes refers to the night of the 26th, since it was at the end of that day , and the witness returned to his home, when the events to be narrated took place.

All the data and details of this observation have been reported to us by Mr. Alberto Adell, correspondent of the CEI in Béjar, Salamanca, a researcher who has shown great will and interest in carrying out his research, which we think is indeed admirable and worthy of all praise: we are well aware of the difficulties faced by the researcher and the enormous amount of time that must be devoted to surveys if they are to be carried out completely and properly. We repeat, then, thank you very much Mr. Adell.

In relation to the matter at hand and by way of introduction, we will literally reproduce some phrases of Mr. Adell contained in one of the letters he sent us: “The case is of the utmost interest and has a truly overwhelming wealth of detail. I only hope that in my writing I have managed to turn what I heard into words in five conversations, some of which have taken place in an atmosphere of pure emotion. Because the unusual thing about the case is that I judge the main witness of the events, Mr. Santos Nicolás, as a methodical, cerebral and rather cold man, and yet, in my first two interviews I was not able to get a coherent account due to the emotional state of the witness, because relives the facts and runs over into speech in a bad way. However, at no time have I doubted the veracity of his testimony and indeed he has never contradicted himself in anything”.

So far the words of Mr. Adell.

The emotion of the main witness when recounting the events after a few months should not surprise us at all, since we know that such a psychological climate is customary in those who have made -luckily them- observations as impressive as the one that is now occupying our attention. The emotional charge is notably increased by the fact, which occurs in this case and in almost all of them, that the two main witnesses kept almost total silence and absolute discretion in relation to what was observed, in such a way that even between them they spoke of what happened with extreme parsimony. Precisely, due to this circumstance, the need to explain what happened and confide it to someone increases as the subject represses himself (this is a known and frequent psychological process), and when the moment of finding and making contact with a person deserving of full trust has arrived, who is expected to give maximum understanding to the story, and that you feel great interest in it, then it is about releasing the inner tension suffered and it is intended to expose, with great enthusiasm and maximum speed, the lived experience, greatly celebrating the witness having occasion or opportunity to “download”. This occurs in most cases, although there are, as in all, the corresponding exceptions.

All this exposed, let’s go on to try to expose in a somewhat systematic way everything that refers to the UFO observation to which we have been referring.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE OBSERVATION

We are now going to enter into an extensive and detailed description of the observation and how much it relates to, for which we will reproduce, practically literally and for the most part, the excellent report made by our correspondent Mr. Adell.

A) Testimony of Mr. Santos Nicolás, main witness.

ON September 8, 1970, a friend informed me by phone that he wanted to see me to tell me something about a UFO observation in the province of Cáceres. This friend is an industrialist from Béjar, aware of my activities in the field of research on Unidentified Flying Objects and who was fortunate enough to hear a sparse conversation at the Lago Gabriel Y Galán Yacht Club on the 6th of September.

Half an hour after the call, I was already chatting with him in his office and he told me briefly: “You will see if it may interest you, but apparently the teacher and the doctor of one of the towns near the Swamp have seen, at 3 in the morning, a strange flying object, with its turret, its legs, its strange lights , and all for a time long enough to be able to capture unique details.”

Mr. Adell spent the week surveying the area on some good maps to familiarize himself with the terrain. The following Sunday, at 8 o’clock in the morning, he was already on his way, covering the 60 kms. that separate you from the scene. But let’s leave the floor to our researcher Mr. Alberto Adell:

«I ignore the details until I have made contact with the main witness Mr. Santos Nicolás, a National Teacher residing in Guijo de Granadilla, where he practices his profession. I consider it interesting to mention D. Faustino, teacher from the neighboring town of friend of D. Santos, who not only corroborated the facts but also considered the integrity of the witness Mr. Nicolás.

The first thing that I must consign is the aspect of the land that surrounds the “Gabriel y Galán” Reservoir, and that covers the entire municipality of Guijo de Granadilla. Since the dam was completed, the appearance has changed, now there are roads and before only dusty local roads between rolling hills, scree between valleys and hills, and all of it dotted with holm oaks, olive trees and stunted shrubs. Now, the roads are at least passable: the floor is good and traveling them is even pleasant.

D. Santos Nicolás is a restrained man, who measures his words and is not a friend of exuberant ramblings. He is a young man, 40 years old, good-looking, simple, talkative and extremely affable. When introduced, his reaction was instantaneous, not hiding his contentment: “… I was looking forward to this so that I could tell someone who understood me about the strange case that I have lived through.” There is emotion on his face, an emotion that will increase as the conversation focuses on the early morning of March 27, half a year ago. Six months is many months and yet the excitement that Don Nicolás shows as he recalls the events that occurred is interesting. First I let him speak what he wants to tell me. Comfortably sitting in a room I listen to it. His narration is somewhat difficult to interpret, since his evident nervousness makes him lack the necessary continuity to be able to place it in the proper dimensions of space and time.

Once unburdened, I impose the method of answering the questions in the Questionnaire. Indeed, the conversation now flows more coherently and, in addition to getting strong answers, it also gives me time to take note of details that were not specified in the Questionnaire.

The conversation, in the form of a dialogue and with a reasonable order when transcribing it, was developed in these terms:

• … I was coming, on the night of March 26, 1970, to give my evening classes to some boys and girls from Ahigal from the Baccalaureate courses. It would be 12:30 at night … I was coming slowly, in my car.
• -Did you feel tired?
• -No, normal … I have a certain habit of staying up late, as these classes are common.
• -Were you aware of the night, of the firmament?
• -He returned calm, aware of the driving of the car, but how he was going slowly he could perfectly contemplate the sky. The night was dark and cold. Nothing could arouse my curiosity unless something unusual happened. Suddenly, I seemed to guess a high light to my right, a light I perceived from the corner of my eye.
• -I was stunned, not scared; rather surprised and at the same time excited. The vision was not for less, because it was something really extraordinary: it was a huge disk, measuring approximately 12 to 15 meters. in diameter by 2.5 to 3 meters. Tall. The ship was illuminated from the inside, as this light came out through square peepholes located in the lower part of the disk. I could perfectly perceive a turret crowned by a rotating beacon that also gave off the same orange light. However, the light from the headlamp was flickering, I think, because of the rotating motion it possessed.
• -Please explain to me the peculiarities of this lighthouse light.
• - You see, this light was not very intense, it only reached a small area around the turret and formed like a crown around the lighthouse.
• - Did he seem to blink?
• - I cannot say in an absolute way that that was a blink … You could tell that the headlight was turning but it was a slight pulsation, like a heartbeat.
• - Do you consider that it was not an absolute intermittence?
• Not at all.
• - Go ahead, please.
• - Well …, the strange apparatus flew majestically, totally horizontal, without any noise, smoothly and slowly. In reality, all the movements that he made during the three hours that the observation lasted were extremely slow and majestic. Seeing it was really impressive.
• -What did you do when you saw it?
• - I stopped the car immediately and began to observe him through the windshield, without trying to get out, since, fearing to lose sight of him, I preferred not to take my eyes off him for a moment.
• -At what distance from Guijo did this happen?

• - I was approximately 900 meters away. of the aforementioned town. The flying object passed exactly over kilometer point 1 from Ahigal to Guijo.
• -Where did the strange object come from?
• -It came from the Berrocal. He came out above these oaks
• (the witness shows me a photograph pointing out a point).
• - How far were you from the object?
• - I was about 100 meters. from the vertical from where it passed and I estimate that it was flying at a maximum of 250 meters. high, rather about 200 meters.

• - So do you think that the flying object passed you at a maximum of 250 to 265 meters?
• - I think so. Of course I don’t think there were more, because the vision was absolutely perfect.
• -Where was the UFO headed?
• -As I told you, it crossed over km. 1 and headed towards the Arena upon reaching the fence -a stone wall-, the apparatus did the strangest thing: it changed course without transitions, without the slightest variation in its speed, at an angle of approximately 80 to 90 ° (see Map, point B)

• - Didn’t you see him describe any arc of a circle to turn?
• - I admit that because of my position I was not in perfect condition to realize in detail whether the inertia was dragging him to describe a small arc, but, of course, I would swear that the change was totally abrupt.
• -At what distance from you did this occur?
• - You can see it yourself …, there are not more than 1,500 meters.
• -And what else?
• - He continued his majestic march, wrapped in his reddish halo, advancing slowly towards the Swamp.
• What did you do when you realized that the UFO was not moving away from the area?
• - I couldn’t be happier. I made the decision to follow him “to the end of the world” … So, then, I started the car, went through the town and took the Pantano road to get as close as possible.
• - Did you stop seeing him at some point?
• - Yes, when crossing Guijo, but as soon as I left, already located in the first kilometer, I lost it again, because the trees hid it from my view, but when I reached Chinarral there it was: totally immobile and a little to the right of the Dam (It was a quarter to one in the morning of the 27th.)
• - What did you see from this point, when you first encountered the immobilized UFO?
• - The appearance of the object had completely changed. First of all, I must say that the device was very low, between the holm oaks and the mountain in the background, that is, I estimated it at about 200 meters. maximum height. The halo, which surrounded him while he had been moving, had completely disappeared and had become powerful jets of light that, coming from the lower part of the structure of the ship, reached the ground.
• -What number of light beams did you see?
• - About ten or twelve. But this was a very particular light: it was very similar in intensity to fluorescent light, although of a slightly yellow-greenish color.
• - Did it illuminate a large area of land?
• - There is the strange thing about this light: the first impression it made me was that the device was perched on the ground on legs or columns. Later, I realized that they were not supports but beams of light
• -Why did they seem like supports: because they are totally uniform in intensity?
• - Exactly! There were no dark areas, but a column of light, like “boxed in”
• -Between column and column I could see the blackness of the night and the mountains. Unfortunately, some holm oaks made it impossible for me to see the reflection that those beams of light produced on the ground; but, oddly enough, I don’t think there was any reflection. On the other hand, the lighthouse of the turret continued with its strange palpitation …, and what I saw very clearly were lights on the sides of the disk that placed it perfectly in its dimensions.
• -Tell me about these side lights.
• - Well. They were lights that turned on and off.
• - Intermittently?
• — I don’t know … maybe they rotate with the device and hence their intermittence. You see, they had something special, because although on the right side you could see a green light above and two red lights below, all of them were placed on the same vertical axis so that when they appeared on the left side, only the two red lights were visible. but not the green light.
• - Are you sure that the device rotates on itself?
• - I am firmly convinced of this, because even the flashing of these lights coincided with the impression of the spinning of the disk and the headlight.
• - Meanwhile, the light beams from below would also be rotating forming a mass of light …?
• - Not at all. The beams of light were totally fixed and did not move.
• - Did you see the skylights, windows or whatever?
• - I can’t pin it down exactly. The feeling it gave me is that all the light had been concentrated in the beams. Actually, I don’t think I put all my possible attention on the skylights, as I knew that the skylights were there anyway.
• - Well, how long do you calculate that the observation of the immobile UFO lasted?
• - I was there for about 15 minutes, maybe 20. My intention was to cross the Dam and observe it from a new point, closer. I started the car and advanced about 200 meters. I did not dare to go any further, because I had the fear that he would see me and escape. I got out of the car again. From this point I could see it closer and also with extreme perfection.(See photo 3, taken from point 3 on the Map.)… Suddenly he was on the move. It was extraordinary: he picked up the beams of light like a bird picks up its wings, gently.

• -I suppose it’s an image …
• - Of course … I mean, by expressing myself like this, to the softness, to the beauty …, because it was beautiful. The light folded back on itself gently and, simultaneously, the halo returned to surround the apparatus and I saw the peepholes lit up again. The aircraft slowly resumed flight.
• - In what direction?
• - To the right, towards the Sierra.
• - What did you do then?
• I started the car again and jumped forward with the intention of passing the Dam, as the UFO was following a direction that allowed it to be followed along the road. I lost sight of him when I went down to the level of the Dam, but when I passed it some 200 meters later I was astonished: the UFO had changed in its movements since, instead of moving away, it had stopped again in the Berrocoso, precisely on the aforementioned farmhouse. At that time I was about 2 km. of the UFO and I could see how it had the light beams projected down again, just as I had seen them before. However, I thought I would see it even better if I advanced a hundred meters until I reached the road that goes directly to the Berrocoso village. Indeed, the view from there was splendid.(Point 5 on the Map)

• -And what happened next…?
• - I did not get out of my astonishment, because I realized that more than an hour ago I had been given to contemplate something wonderful, something so unusual that it truly could not be of this world. I realized that the next day, when I told what I had seen, they would take me for a madman. I felt the need to find someone who could corroborate what I was seeing, because there came a moment, between the prevailing cold and emotion, in which I no longer knew if all that was reality or I was dreaming it. I immediately remembered Jesus (he refers to his friend D. Jesús Martín, doctor from Guijo de Granadilla). I made the decision to go looking for him, but before I took a new look at the UFO, it seemed to me that it was moving: it was a slight vertical movement, it went up and down, it repeated the movement and finally it became immobilized again. I did not wait any longer. I got into the car hastily, started, turned around and started back to town. (It was already approximately one thirty in the morning).
• -Continue please…
• - I went to Jesus’ house and found him there. Then I hastily explained what had happened to me and invited him to join me. She put on a coat and got in the car. We left town quickly, me in fear of never seeing the UFO again. However, as soon as we left Guijo, we could see the UFO again. We continued advancing along the road but we lost sight of it when we passed a speed bump. Despite this, upon reaching Chinarral, we again saw him motionless. However, the situation had changed, as the UFO had moved away from the point of Berrocoso where I had left it. I was able to realize perfectly that he was now over the Sierra, that is, that he had left the municipal area and, crossing the main road, had placed himself between Casas del Monte and the highest point of the Sierra. (Points 4 and E of the Map; see photo no. 3.)
• - Approximately tell me the distances.
• - Well, I think that the UFO was at a height that oscillated between 800 and 1,000 meters, and the distance that separated us from it could be about 15 or 16 km.
  (After checking this distance on the maps, it was seen that there may be an error of 1 or 2 km in more or less, since it was practically impossible to locate the coordinates of the vertical of the UFO with absolute precision.)
• - Didn’t it occur to you to follow him again, now that you were not alone?

• - Of course it occurred to me. But the apparatus had already moved far away from us and I thought that to observe it closely we had to go to the main road; On the other hand, I remembered that for two days I had been driving with the car tank reserve, so I was afraid I would run out of fuel. On the other hand, what I had proposed was achieved, because my friend Jesus had also seen the UFO and I already felt satisfied.
• -How long were you looking at the UFO?
• -I can’t tell you: We were watching it for about half an hour or something more.
• - What happened later?
• -We got into the car completely frozen, I was wearing a sweater and therefore the low temperature was more pronounced. Jesus was better equipped, although not enough to be able to remain still in the open. I remember that Jesus suddenly said to me: “Why don’t you try to give him some signals with the car lights?” I had the vehicle crossed in the ditch and focused roughly towards the place where the UFO was, so it seemed to me that we could test. I hit the lights several times and went back to lengths repeatedly. Suddenly something extraordinary happened: a very powerful beam of light came across the distance and completely flooded us…, we were left with a stone. I remember that Jesus, truly impressed, reacted by pretending to hide from the light by throwing himself under the dashboard, at the same time that he yelled at me: “Be careful, you … He gets on us and burns us!”

• - What did you do then?
• - Despite being half blinded at first, we were able to quickly realize that he had only focused on us with a powerful beam of light for a few seconds.
• - How many?
• - Impossible to specify … The same could be 2 or 10. But when I looked up the light had stopped and everything was the same as before: the UFO was still static over the Sierra and nothing had changed.
• - What color was the jet of light that you received?
  - Well, I think orange-white. . . Yes, although what was really impressive was its tremendous intensity.
• - You say that the beam of light blinded them momentarily, but do you consider that their blindness lasted longer than normal?
• -Well, no. It really only lasted a few seconds.
• - Did it cause you any abnormal discomfort, stinging for example, at that time or later?
• -Nothing at all … But now that you say it, I realize something that may be important.
• -What is it?
• -For about two or three months I have been noticing a burning in my eyes. I had not associated it with the light of that night, but it could well be …
• -Have you been examined by a doctor?
• -Yes sir. She has diagnosed me with conjunctivitis and prescribed a few drops.
• -Have you noticed relief from the drops that were prescribed for you?
• -Well, for now. But, in truth I was not completely cured.
• -Did you spend a long time looking at the UFO?
• -Well yes, although of course we were already tired.
• -Nothing else happened in that time interval?
• -Well, you see, I think there were times when the light from the turret was higher than before, as if it had risen significantly from the UFO. Jesus and I were discussing it and we agreed on it. It seemed as if the airship split into two lights. In any case, I can assure you that the movement of the light from the turret was not anarchic, but only a slight rise vertically without ever leaving the axis of symmetry of the apparatus, but rising above it.
• - Did it give you the feeling that this light had autonomy?
• -No. It certainly seemed subservient to the rest of the aircraft. I don’t know if she also climbed the turret, since she only saw the light rise. (I find it very difficult to clarify this detail because D. Santos saw the aircraft up close and, consequently, knew of the existence of a turret, and any luminous phenomenon that occurred in the upper part of the UFO was associated with it. Therefore, I am not putting too much emphasis on it, since it is a bit confused and does not find a logical explanation or a concrete meaning in the luminous movement described. Even in the case of an authentic attempt to fold the ship, D. Santos would have continued to believe that it was simply a turret lift.)
• -And then?
• - It would be around two in the morning when we decided to go home. I, as always, drove while Jesus watched. The UFO was disappearing from our sight as we advanced along the road, due to its curves and changes in elevation. However, Jesus kept repeating to me that the UFO was still there, every time the terrain was clear and no obstacle stood between it and us. We entered the village, I left Jesus at his house, said goodbye to him and went to mine. When I walked in, I found the family awake — they had been busy slaughtering the pig and had only recently finished. My daughters were already in their bedroom, but in the living room, Aunt Hipólita and Doña Engracia, the neighbor who had helped them, remained chatting. They must have noticed something strange because, without having to tell them about what happened, they asked me worriedly if something happened.
• -What did you explain to them?
• -I then summarized my wonderful vision, although I do not think they paid much attention to me, because I recognize that they were not things to be heard but to be seen. It suddenly occurred to me that the UFO might still be there and I couldn’t resist the temptation to see it again. I called my daughters María Luisa and Alicia, ordered them to put on warm clothes, and, together with Aunt Hipólita and Doña Engracia, we went outside. My intention was to approach behind the cemetery, located about 150 meters. from my house, along the road to Los Molinillos and to the place known as the Oil Mill
  Indeed, there it was: we could still see it all among the olive trees (in March, these trees were bare of leaves so the vision of the sky was very wide). As they gazed at the device in amazement, I gave them details of my adventure that night. It was a little later than 3 in the morning when we all retired to our houses, despite the fact that the UFO was still there.

B) Testimony of Aunt Hipólita and Alicia.

Later I have spoken with Aunt Hipólita, but she is not able to say anything more than “… it was very beautiful …, beautiful …, with lights and everything …, very beautiful …”. I think the parsimony of her statement is perfectly worth it.
I also spoke with Alicia, who, despite the distance that separated her from the UFO, was able to appreciate certain details of the aircraft and, particularly, of the lights, data that exactly coincide with those provided by Mr. Santos Nicolás, her father.

C) Testimony of Mr. Jesús Martín, doctor from Guijo de Granadilla.

Don Jesús Martín is usually a very busy man, so until my third trip to Guijo it was not possible for me to exchange impressions with him. The interview was held in the presence of a young man, Don Jesús’ brother-in-law, also a doctor, who was completely unaware of what happened to his relative. Assuming that the presence of a third person could in some way affect the dialogue with D. Jesús Martín, I tried to create a cordial and trusting atmosphere before entering fully into the subject matter of my visit. I began by explaining the public approach to the problem and the work of private centers that are seriously dedicated to the scientific study of the UFO phenomenon.

D. Jesús Martín is not very talkative, an extremely serious man, giving me the impression of being a good professional absorbed by his daily work, and somewhat outside of everything that is not his profession as a doctor. However, he welcomes me with sympathy and after a long chat, he seems indeed determined to tell me what happened without any misgivings or reluctance.

• -Is it okay for me to ask you some questions about the case you lived through?
• -Yes Yes. You can ask what you want.
• - I understand that on the night of March 26–27, Mr. Santos Nicolás came looking for him so that he might witness something unusual that he had seen.
• - Effectively. I was reading quietly when Santos called and entered without further ado. He seemed noticeably upset and visibly excited to me. He was talking about a very strange luminous flying object that he had been following up to Berrocoso. He urged me to go out with him so that I could see him too and later confirm that it was not a dream. Frankly, I saw him so upset that I did not hesitate for a moment to accompany him, since Santos is not exactly a person who loses his calm for a foolish thing. I put on my shoes, threw a coat on top, and left in a few minutes. And shortly after leaving town we already saw the light of the UFO, even though, apparently, it was no longer where Santos had last seen it, but had moved over the Sierra. We advanced to the Chinarral, from where we could see it at will, although far away.
• - Your friend D. Santos has told me about 16 kms …
• - I don’t think there were that many in a straight line.
• -Let’s see. According to Mr. Santos Nicolás the light could be found over the Casas del Monte area, but exactly over the Sierra.
• - Yes Yes. It is just as you say.
• - Well, later I have measured on a map the distance between the Chiparral and the first contour lines of the Sierra, resulting in about 16 or 17 kms.
• -It may be so. Only that I was surprised by the unusual luminosity of the UFO when mediating so many kilometers between it and us.
• - Are you talking about an unidentified flying object?
• - There is no doubt that it was a UFO, although really the only thing I perceived were its lights.
• - What were those lights like?
• - Well, you will see: a light to the right, a light to the left and another a little elongated in the center, although the latter located a little lower.
• - Do you have any idea about the shape of this object?
• - Of course, it was oval in shape.
• - Is it a deduction or did you really see it that way?
• - It gave me that impression.
• - Did the UFO have any lights on the top.
• - No, in principle I didn’t have it; later yes.

(I do not think it is necessary to go into more specific details since D. Jesús Martín did not see the object up close.)

• -Let’s continue … Do you suppose that the sighted object was of a conventional type?
• - Really I do not think so. I admit that at first I thought it could be a helicopter, but it was completely silent and I think that despite the distance we should have heard the noise. In addition, one must take into account the explanations given by my friend Santos in the sense that he had been observing the object closely and had seen its strange lights in detail.
• - Can you describe what the lights he saw were like?
• - Well, rather an orange color, but with a power out of the ordinary. I don’t think they can be compared to the light given by a farmhouse located at a similar distance.
• - Did you find the object spinning like a top?
• - I can only assure you that, at least, the light above was spinning.
• Did you try to associate the observation with something familiar?
• - The truth, yes … But without result. It was truly something very strange.
• - Have you ever seen something similar?
• - Never. Absolutely not.
• - It was due to your suggestion that D. Santos made light signals to the UFO with the car’s headlights, right?
• - Yes, exactly. And as a consequence of this, a jet of light of extraordinary power came upon us.
• - Blinding?
• -Totally. It was a light beam that erased everything … to the point where it seemed to us that the device was on us.
• -Did this impression pass quickly?
• -We couldn’t really specify how long it lasted, but I think it was only a few seconds. Then everything returned to normal.
• - Do you understand by normality the fact that the device looked the same as before?
• - Yes, as if nothing had happened. I thought that perhaps the object had lit the headlight to sweep or pass in a semicircle, but the light was totally focused on us, so I had to admit that the chance factor was very unlikely, that is, the flash had been directed against we.
• - So, do you admit that “they” responded to your luminous stimulus?
• - I do not know what to think. I told Santos to repeat the operation: he went back to making variations with the car lights without the object doing anything …
• - Did this light that they directed you have any special characteristics?
• -Well, I do not know. It was of great intensity and orange in color; I only know that.
• -It should be very intense to dazzle you, if we take into account the enormous distance that separated them.
• -Yes, of course.
• - Nothing else happened?
• - Any. This is how the object was until we got tired of looking at it and decided to go home.
• - Did you two make an agreement to make public what you had seen?
• -Not at all.
• - Didn’t you tell anyone about it?
• With very few people. I have seen Santos a few times, since each of them has their professional job, perhaps a couple of times alone. To the family, only on the first day when we returned home that night.
  I also discussed it with Manolo, a representative of pharmacy products, brother-in-law of the town pharmacist, who came to visit me because we are friends. This man told me that the night before, that is, the night of the 26th, around 9:30 p.m., when he was passing by the road from Salamanca to Plasencia, about 20 kms from the latter town, he saw a strange light on the Sierra, to the left of the road. Then I discussed with him what Santos and I had seen, precisely during that night.
• - Do you want to add something else that in your opinion may be of interest to a UFO Research Center?
• - I don’t think … I actually saw little …
• - Well, in my opinion what you have seen and stated is important and sufficient, since the really positive value of your testimony lies in the fact that it corroborates the phenomenon that D. Santos observed in such detail. At no time have I doubted what was related by his friend Mr. Santos Nicolás. However, I must point out the success he had in going to look for you, since as a consequence there were two people who witnessed the evolutions of the OVN I. To conclude and thinking about the importance of this informative work, I would like to ask you: Can I absolutely trust the testimony of D. Santos?
• - Totally and absolutely!

(It is curious that the testimonies of both witnesses differ in some details. My personal opinion in relation to this apparent dichotomy is based on the fact that D. Santos, having had the UFO so close and having been able to appreciate many details of it than D. Jesus could not grasp, he makes different mental associations resulting in different data from those of his friend D. Jesus.)

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE UFO

Don Santos Nicolás describes the UFO extensively, because at the distance he saw it he was allowed to appreciate a great deal of detail.

The graphic descriptions that accompany this study have been drawn strictly following the indications of D. Santos so that the images correspond as closely as possible with the reality of the object observed.

The first design made by Mr. Nicolás was a very flattened truncated cone located on a cylinder with a large diameter. In the cylindrical part (lower part of the object), he drew a sketch of peepholes. The flashing lights: green above and red below, he placed them at the ends of the cylindrical part of the structure, thus suggesting that they were widely separated from each other.

The “lighthouse”, located at the top of the nave, was seen as a turret or cupola but without crowning it, but as about 40 cm from the top point of the object. The central part of the UFO was in total darkness, as the light from the “lighthouse” was not enough to illuminate it, nor did the peepholes let through enough light to be able to guess something. Therefore, it can only be assumed what the UFO was in reality in its main central body by certain brightness that was perceived in it.

Given the situation, it occurred to me that I could prepare some designs strictly adhering to the witness’s explanations, trying, through successive corrections, to try to make them look as close as possible to the reality of what was observed.
Schematically, the most significant lines of the drawings that I made are reproduced below. (Fig. 1 to 3)

You can clearly see my insistence on the concavity of the lower part, since it was very well defined that from the perceived shadows, it could be guessed that the base of the UFO was not flat, but concave. The witness suggested that the two ends marked with the letter E could be a kind of screen that channeled the 8 or 10 light beams, on the occasions when the UFO seemed to explore the ground without allowing these beams to spread widely around it. Mr. Santos Nicolás pointed out firmly that, in his opinion, these light beams did not protrude in their line of contact with the terrain of the strict dimensions of the UFO in question. He also claimed that these beams were apparently no more than 30 to 50 cm wide when they emerged, eventually turning into beams of light with a maximum width that should vary between 1 and 1.20 meters.

I, for my part, had made some two-color drawings of the UFO and the landscape. These drawings strongly impressed the witness, who, nevertheless, began to make corrections regarding the dimensions of the object observed, the location of the lights, the character of the lights, etc. Thanks to this, I was finally able to make two drawings that reflected a maximum similarity with the object sighted, according to Mr. Nicolás’s opinion.

The engravings that are published below (Figs. 4 and 5) are, therefore, the result of retouching and corrections by the witness. The designs in Chinese ink have been made on cardboard without grain, being later photographed with a studio camera, to be finally colored.

We have tried to study the light beams of the object with D. Santos Nicolás, having made very little progress in our deductions. In the first place, he supposed them in a concentric circle in the apparatus (Fig. 6), but he also admits that they could be in the sense of a diameter (Fig. 7), since he does not understand how in the case of the beams being located In the shape of a circle, those that would be located at the back would not steal the profile of the front beams (remember that the witness ensures that all the light beams were perfectly clear: each one well defined and separated from the others). Anyway, what I am sure of is that, placed one way or the other, these beams did not rotate, so they should start from a structure that did not rotate at the same time as the disk.

Regarding the opinion of D. Jesús Martín, I do not think it necessary to go into more specific details, since the doctor did not see the object up close. It is my belief that the explanation of what is indicated by this witness is based on the fact that the UFO was not in a completely horizontal situation, but with the far end in a higher position with respect to the other end, the one closest to the witness, that is to say: that the apparatus was in a tilted position. This explains why lights were distinguished only in E and in · E ‘, and another light, lower and elongated, approximately at point B, light that would correspond to the «lighthouse». This light from the «lighthouse», due to the tilted position of the UFO, was half hidden by the upper part of the object, which, in this case, acted as a screen so that the light that came out of it was scattered faintly through the object. disc, revealing the oval shape of the apparatus seen from a considerable distance (Fig. 8).

DESCRIPTION OF THE FAILURE SUFFERED IN THE ELECTRICAL FACILITIES OF THE DAM

During one of my trips to Guijo de Granadilla I heard about the fact that there had been a major breakdown in the electrical installations of the Pantano Dam, and this on an unspecified date of March 1970. By chance I had easily The electrical worker who carried out the repairs was within my reach, so I tried to ask him for details, with the aim of clarifying whether it was feasible to associate this fault with the UFO sighting.
The operator in question did not exactly remember the date, but he claimed to believe that it happened at the end of March. Given this circumstance, I considered it necessary to continue the investigations, since what happened could be of great importance for this UFO observation, due to its real probative nature.

The operator stated that the breakdown consisted of a short circuit and the subsequent burning of a hose with a 3.5 cm radius section, of which only two phases were burned, leaving the neutral whole. These are cables that carry 380 volts current, which is how it leaves the transformers, which reduce the 10,000 volts that enter to this voltage. The electrician attributed the failure to humidity, because when he lifted the tiles in the chamber where the burnt joint was located, he found noticeable leaks and even fine sand particles that had seeped through between the tiles.

The operator could not tell me anything more, but I assumed that if he located the Chief Maintenance Engineer of the Dam, things could change. However, I did not find him, since he had just left with his family for Madrid, so I went to the Industrial Expert who had been left in charge of the facilities of the Dam. Given that said Lord is a friend of Mr. Santos Nicolás, give him a questionnaire of technical questions, with the request that he send it to the hands of the said Industrial Expert.

Here is the result of the questionnaire:

Question: Date of when the dam failure occurred?

Answer: It was discovered on March 27 and it must have occurred at dawn, since the fault did not exist on the night of March 26, since it affects the lights on one side of the dam and we did not see news of the failure until almost noon on the 27th.
Question: Type of fault?
Answer: At first we assumed that it had been due to the humidity that exists at the specific point of the short circuit, that is, in the register of the bottom galleries of the Dam. However, once this short circuit was fixed, the fault persisted, so we had to continue looking for the fault in the installation. Finally, this was found in the lighthouse registers outside the wall, which is where (according to the Expert assures) the breakdown began.

Question: Causes of electrical failure?
Answer: Mysteries of electricity, since the real causes have not been identified.
(We can expand the information by indicating that from the facts there are several masts that are communicated in such a way that when one approaches them, they give a strong electric shock.)

Question: Since the construction of the Dam, what type of breakdowns have occurred?
Answer: Several due to engine failure. There have also been some due to installation defects. Without a doubt the most important has been this.
(The technician also reports that despite the evidence of humidity in the background registers, he never believed that it had started there, since on another occasion the galleries were flooded and, despite this, there was no short circuit. )
Question: What happens to some splices, properly insulated and enclosed in a register, if we subject the assembly to a strong magnetic field from the outside?
Answer: Undoubtedly a type of fault equal to the one we had recently, especially if the magnetic field and the current are in different directions. The electromagnetic difference between field and current would determine which of the two forces would be predominant, to the detriment of the other.

PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS ON SOME ANIMALS OF THE SITE

In the CEI Archive there is enough data to estimate that the passage of the UFO through the area of the “Gabriel y Galán” Swamp caused a rare disease in various animals in the Guijo de Granadilla area. This investigation ran into the enormous problem of trying to clarify something that was systematically denied me. Given the impossibility of being able to bring concrete and positive data to the public light, I have tried to find non-negative data about what happened to the animals of the place, which I have fully and emphatically achieved in my research, even without obtaining the evidence of concrete material evidence .
For all of the above, those Centers and researchers of the UFO Phenomenon who wish more information in this regard for their studies, should contact the CEI’s “UFO Investigation Commission”, which will be provided to them confidentially.

GEOLOGICAL DATA IN THE AREA OF SOIL OBSERVATION AND CONSTITUTION

Thanks to the Industrial Expert who so kindly offered to answer the questionnaire on the failures that occurred in the Dam, I have had access to the reports made by the geologists who made the pertinent prospects in the area of the Alagón tributary basin, in order to find the ideal place to raise the wall of the Dam. This report tells us about the absence of major faults in the entire municipality of Guijo de Granadilla.

The soundings carried out revealed a subsoil formed from plutonic and metamorphic rocks (granite, quartzites, slate) from the Proterozoic, and those from the Paleozoic (Primary Age).
This is one of the most solid and ancient areas of Spain, with few fissures and a lack of faults. I give this report in case it may be of interest to certain French scholars, who see a possible relationship between aligned sightings of UFOs and faults in the subsoil of the area.

REFERENCE TO OTHER UFO OBSERVATIONS IN WHICH THE VISION OF SOME TYPES OF COHERENT LUMINOUS BEAMS ALSO CONCURRED

As a complementary and informative title, it may be of interest for readers to take note of some UFO observations in which the factor or element constituted by the vision, by witnesses, of some type of beam or light ray whose most characteristic feature has also concurred remarkable and accused was precisely, apart from the unusual and inexplicable of its very appearance, origin and nature of the fact that the luminous edges appeared totally sharp without giving rise to any zone of penumbra, that is to say of transition from light to shadow, of such so that as a backdrop to the light beams, only absolute blackness or darkness was appreciated, the luminous edges appearing clearly and perfectly differentiated, suggesting something like solid light, highly coherent or boxed, to the extent that it was in occasions (as in the one at hand) initially confused with legs or support columns of the UFO. The closest thing that we, in recent years, know would be certain rays of laser light, whose dimensions are very modest compared to those attributed by witnesses to some of the luminous phenomena observed by them. Some witnesses state that the luminous edges appeared so sharp and perfectly delimited that they seemed to have been cut with a very sharp knife on the dark background that surrounded them.

There are numerous UFO observations that we could cite here, but the enumeration will be limited as we deem it sufficient for the purposes of supplementing the information that we have proposed) to a few that we have culled from various copies of the GEPA publication Phénomenes Spatiaux. We will cite these observations in a tape and fragmentary manner, leaving the possibility of readers to delve into it in detail, if it is of interest, taking into account the data provided regarding the number and date of the GEPA journal in which were published. We could obviously cite many other cases collected in various Bulletins or Magazines, among the publications that we also consider serious, responsible and deserving of credit and attention, but for the purposes of systematization and greater ease of location, the signer has preferred to limit himself to carrying out the corresponding search among the cases published in Phénomenes Spatiaux, as stated above.

The fantastic tube of light

A) Observation of Villiers in Morvan (France). The events occurred on August 21, 968, between 10:30 and 11 in the morning. The witnesses were Messrs. Marius Carré and Paul Billard, who saw, coming from a “white spot”, which they had already observed before near a copse situated in the distance to their left, “a kind of luminous extension, in shaped like a pipe or a factory chimney ‘that stretched towards the place where they were working. In 5 or 10 minutes, said “luminous tube” reached a maximum length of about 2 km and stopped on a hedge of bushes that delimited the field in which the witnesses were working and located about 30 or 40 meters from them.
The observation of the astonishing “tube of light” lasted something like 10 minutes, during which time the end of said “tube or luminous chimney” closest to the witnesses (it has already been indicated that it was only 30 or 40 meters from them) followed the witnesses in their slow movement, who were manipulating a wagon pulled by a tractor in the task of loading hay. Thus they traveled about 100 meters in ten minutes, always followed, like a fabulous tube or means of observation, by the luminous end of such an extraordinary phenomenon, whose diameter the witnesses set between one and two meters. The witnesses describe said luminous end as containing a kind of extraordinarily bright spider web and, due to this, almost unbearable to look at, in which small points of light in movement were appreciated, something similar to what can be seen on the screen turned on of a television.

The end of the light tube

This very interesting observation was described and commented on in the GEPA magazine by Messrs. Joël Mesnard and René Fouéré, who personally conducted a survey about all this at the scene of the events. The duration of the observation was a total of 40 to 45 minutes and concluded with the “luminous tube” retracting to the point from which it had been emitted, which was seen by the witnesses as a white spot located about 2 km from them. The size of this white spot is described as something similar to a «Citroen 2 CV» car, having changed color before its disappearance, that is to say once the referred «light tube» had been completely retracted. As a very illustrative and sagacious comment, Mr. René Fouéré indicates: «… We can think of a coherent beam of light, whose beam, due to the non-dispersive property of said light, takes on the appearance of a solid bar , that is to say, of an almost material object. But even if a very powerful laser could create this “bar of light”, it is not very well understood how such a bar would be able to stop and appear as cut or sectioned by a sharp and invisible instrument. The nature of this Tube is beyond us (in the sense that it is beyond our knowledge). . . Be that as it may, the case of Villiers en Morvan adds a new chapter, one of the most disconcerting, to the long series of these manipulations of light (if it is indeed light), of these optical witchcraft, to which some unusual devices seem to have a habit of resorting. . . We cannot think that simple, healthy and visibly sincere farmers could have invented this incredible episode in all its details.

B) Observation at Lac de Panneciere (France). The events occurred on October 20, 1968 at 5 in the morning. The witnesses in this case were the fishermen Messrs. F. L. and P. L., and the place of observation was an artificial lake located about 10 km north of Chateau Chinon, in the same French department of Moryan. The two fishermen were walking in single file along the dark and narrow path that borders the lake. Suddenly a strong yellowish-white light illuminated an area two or three meters in diameter around them. For a moment, Mr. FL, who was leading the way, imagined that his companion had lit her electric torch, but immediately understood that it was something different: the two were within a clearly delimited beam that seemed to come from the sky . Mr. F. L. thought he distinguished. at the top of said beam, a dark and confused mass. 2 or 3 seconds passed. the light abruptly extinguished and the two fishermen, in no way frightened, watched as red sparks fell in the rain and were almost immediately extinguished.

C) Observation between Rabat and El Harhoura (Morocco). The witnesses, Mr. Caviglioli and his wife, were traveling in a car on Highway 36 from Rabat to Casablanca. The observation date is December 1, 1968, at 3.50 in the morning. Said observation lasted a total of 45 minutes and included various phases, of which we will mention here those that are cited and described as phases 4 and 5 in the GEPA magazine.

The witnesses saw the UFO far away and as a red disk. In the time of one second (that is, instantaneously), the disk that appeared to them as very far away suddenly appeared as very close. “It was now like a huge cigar.” The witness immediately clarified that the rating of enormous was applied in terms of comparison with the much smaller one that they had been able to see in the UFO in the moments preceding its abrupt approach. The distance between the witnesses and the object is difficult to pin down with precision and can be established approximately between 250 and 600 meters. The UFO was very close to the ground, but not touching it. Then the 5th phase of the observation begins, really extraordinary and surprising: The appearance of a white luminous band is observed between the two lower and upper halves of the object, the shape of which was then clearly appreciated.

The UFO with its light beams

In such circumstances, the witnesses agree that the best way to represent the UFO at that moment is the two plates supported one on the other by its mouth but there is a separation band or interval between the two (the band or band of white light referred to earlier). The brightness of this strip was comparable to that of iodine headlights, even though it did not illuminate the landscape. The witnesses were then able to observe that some “headlights”, with white light and with very little divergent beams, were lit around the lower hull, obliquely illuminating the ground. They did not appear to be light strips but rather “headlights” with little divergent beams. The UFO stopped at a maximum of 150 meters from the witnesses, and Mr. Caviglioli stated that he had had the opportunity to examine it as closely as a car at the same distance. According to him, the diameter of the disk was 15 meters and its thickness, in the center, about 33 meters. In the 6th phase the disappearance of the object takes place, which was rapid and that the witnesses. they fail to explain, leaving them puzzled.

D) Observation in “Das Hochfeld” (French Alsace).
It is a chalet located in the aforementioned place, which is 9 km SE of Schirmeck and at 1,000 meters of altitude. The date of the observation was May 6, 1967 and the time was from 9 to 10 at night.
The witnesses, Mr. Schirrmann, his wife, his 10-year-old son and a friend of the latter, P. Wassmer, 11, traveled that weekend to their chalet in the mountains. According to the account made by the four witnesses, at around 9 o’clock at night they saw a huge black object (or similar to black, because we must not forget that it was from night) that had a lenticular shape and about 15 to 20 meters in diameter. With absolute silence, the UFO slowly approached the chalet. The position of the object was horizontal and was held a little higher than the witnesses, who, consequently, could hardly distinguish anything other than the lower face of it. The object was then at a distance of about 20 to 30 meters from the chalet. Suddenly a thin strip or beam of light came out from under the UFO. Mrs. Schirrmann screamed: the object was there, motionless, a few meters from her chalet and at the height of the roof. A chill ran through the witnesses when they heard a “click or click”. Two other strips or rays of light joined the one previously appeared. They were parallel to the first, but while this one was bluish-white, the other two were mauve-green. The diameter was also different: the first was 2.5 to 3 cm thick. and the other two were thinner, about 1.5 cm. These last two light tapes or strips ended at a height from the ground that can be set at 1 m. All three seemed to be located in the same plane, not vertical, with each other a few tens of centimeters. The ends of the light strips were, in Mr. Schirrman’s opinion, neat and cleanly counted “like a sausage.” At all times the witnesses insisted on the very compact appearance of the light strips.

The observation at Das Hochfeld

Another notable luminous phenomenon related to this same observation is noteworthy: on the ground, a white luminous band or strip took the shape of three of the four sides of a trapezoid. The width of it was like that of a hand, that is, about 10 cms. The three light strips pointed to the interior of the trapezoid, whose two non-parallel sides ended at the foot of the chalet wall. It may be that said luminous band extended over the wall or it could also be that it closed on itself, that is, that the fourth side of the trapezoid appeared next to the wall. The witnesses cannot affirm something concrete since they did not look out the window to observe the wall. The observation of this luminous phenomenon lasted only 10 to 15 seconds and then everything disappeared or went out, suddenly, with a sharp click. Then Mr. Schirrmann said, ‘I don’t like this. Let’s go ! “He closed the window and immediately, driven by curiosity, went out onto the terrace. The object was slowly sliding northward, away from the house. The witnesses could then distinguish, on the upper face of the UFO, something like a greenish luminous cone. Suddenly the object disappeared, always without making a sound, when it was about 100 meters from the chalet, that is, at the same distance as when they saw it appear. The observation was over: it was just after 10 pm.
The following day, Sunday, May 7, the Schirrmanns believed they noticed intense activity from the aircraft of the Strasburg-Entzheim Base, especially Mirage III R, of the 33rd reconnaissance squadron. On Monday, the 8th, the witnesses learned, on the radio and through the local newspaper Les Dernieres Nouvelles de Strasbourg, that the radar station installed precisely in the area of ​​”Das Hochfeld” had detected, on Saturday, May 6, between 20 and 22 hours, the presence of an Unidentified Flying Object.

E) Observation between Kabdrup and Fjelstrup (Denmark). A few months ago we received from the SUFOI (Skandinavisk UFO Information) group in Denmark (Address: Mr. Enling Jensen. Ingstrup Alle, 35. DK 2770 Kastrup) a letter from Mr. Jensen informing us of a case that was transferred in his country dated August 13, 1 970, which also contained compact or encased rays of light. In the following, then, we briefly summarize the observation, including two of the six engravings that accompanied the original letter. (The case can be found complete and with some comments by René Fouéré in Phénomenes Spatiaux, №26, fourth quarter of 1970, pp. 15–19.)
At 10.50 pm that day, the police officer Evald Hansen Maarup was driving to his home in Knud, driving a patrol car. Being between the two mentioned points, the police car was suddenly surrounded by a blue-white light, while the engine stopped. All the lights in the car were also turned off, including the interior lighting. The enveloping light was so powerful that it did not allow him to see anything. Then, shielding his eyes with an arm, Officer Maarup managed, by feeling on the panel, to find the radio. But when he took the microphone to call the central office, he realized that the radio did not work either, as did all the electrical devices in the car. Meanwhile, the temperature inside the vehicle began to rise until it reached a point similar <<to what you feel when you drive in summer with the Sun in front of you>>.

Phase 2

After a while, the light rose. It was a light bulb in the shape of a cone, with a base 4 to 5 meters in diameter. At the same time as Officer Maarup observed this, he could see that the upper extremity of the luminous cone protruded from the base a circular object of gray and of. about 10 meters in diameter. A few seconds later, the light “shrunk” upward, as if absorbed by the strange object. The “shrinking” process lasted about five minutes, allowing Officer Maarup to get out of the police car and see how the last part of the light bulb was “swallowed” by a hole approximately 1 meter in diameter, located at the base of the UFO. Immediately after the total disappearance of the spotlight, the object began. to move, disappearing in a few seconds rising into the air without making any noise.

Phase 3

As the UFO moved away, the entire electrical installation of the car returned to normal operation. At the same time, he was able to start the car without difficulty and, in addition, get in contact with the central station by radio, to which he explained what had happened. Then he got out of the car again (a nearly new 6-cylinder Ford Zodiac) in case there were debris or tracks. He didn’t find anything, but he did notice that the front fender was hot.
In his statement, Officer Maarup added that before his first trip abroad he took three photos with the machine of him, and when he left three more. The next day, when developing them, he verified that in one of them a luminous point appeared in space. In view of this, he passed them on to the Skydstrup Air Base, which was the place from which the news that the country’s newspapers later published came.
With what is transcribed, the signer estimates that the relative, but effective coincidence or similarity, of the luminous phenomena observed by D. Santos Nicolás with what is visualized by numerous other witnesses in very different places and dates, will have been sufficiently revealed. Such consideration lends greater support and credibility, if possible, to what this witness explained. We suppose that for many readers such confirmation, even if indirect, will constitute a valuable element very worthy of being taken into account when forming or issuing an opinion.

He especially stood out in the publication of the book, still a reference today, “Manual del ufólogo” (1979), numerous articles in the Stendek magazine (to highlight the one referring to the Gallarta case, Vizcaya, 1977), and in the review in depth of the concept of Credibility in the so-called “Strangeness-Credibility Test” postulated by Hynek in 1972.
