El día 18 de septiembre de 1768, siendo como las 6 y tres cuartos de la mañana, estando muy serenada y clara se apareció en el horizonte de la villa de Calahorra del Marquesado del Cenete , reino de Granada, un globo tan cristalino como el agua más pura, de figura de una gran botella, con el cuello retortoso y dilatado saliendo por encima de la Sierra Nevada por la parte meridional de esta villa y llevando su rumbo con bastante velocidad hacia el septentrional donde están las sierras de Baza, llevando delante lo grueso este fenómeno, y lo delgado detrás como centelleando dejando conforme caminaba dos líneas de espeso humo que se conservaron separadas, hasta que se deshizo el globo, convirtiéndose en fuego y chispas, a manera de las que arrojan los cohetes que llaman de luces o lágrimas sobre las sierras de Baza, al parecer de los que lo vieron con más reflexión pasando por encima de esta población y aún instante de desecho el globo, se sintió un estruendo espantoso a manera de un gran trueno, que corrió las propias líneas de humo reduciéndolas a una, desvaneciéndose esta a poco rato; siendo este ruido tan extraño a las gentes que las dejó llenas de pavor y pasmo, notando que al pasar por encima de ésta villa se retemblaron sus edificios. Tuvo igual duración el trueno que el fenómeno y en todo sería la de 6 minutos a corta diferencia, su elevación parece fue bastante por las noticias que hay de haberse observado en esta comarca en iguales circunstancias que aquí y de la Alpujarra que está a la parte del mediodía se sabe que le descubrieron venir de hacia el mar; el día se mantuvo sereno aunque con un viento corto de norte finísimo, sin haber llovido antes.

Otro caso relevante más cercano a nuestra época. La noticia la publicó el Diario de Cádiz el día 6 de marzo de 1826, y la aparición se produjo el día 14 de febrero en Campo de Criptana (Ciudad Real).

Damos este relato lo más cerca posible de lo que nos fue relacionado; y sin duda algún que puede haber visto estos fenómenos, que puede ser capaz de dar una descripción más científica, y tal vez, definir Son de ellos.22.

Freaks of the Moon.
The York Herald gravely gives the following under the head of Celestial Phenomena: A person has called at our office, who relates some very curious appearances which he says he (in company with several others) witnessed, in the moon, on their road from Leeds to this city, on Thursday night. When they came near Halton Bar, about II o’clock, the moon had just rises above the horizon, and was shining se- renely in a clear atmosphere. As the party were remark- ing to each other on the fineness of the night, the moon seemed to part in two, its dise separating down the cen- tre, and leaving an apparent space of about one yard be- tween the two hemispheres, in which the distant & deep azure of the sky was visible. Whilst in this state, from the northern limb of the lunar orb, a brigh appearance darted forth in form like the head of a spear, and sur- rounded with brilliant stars. On a sadden, it seemed to be withdraws, and in its place appeared the distinct form of two human figures, which were visible to the waist, and one arm and the hand of one of them was ex- tended on the surface of that half of the dise from which it emerged. A deep red girdle was round the head of one of them. This appearance remained for some time, when a cloud obscared the moon altogether from view. On its having passed away, the same occurrence was re- newed, and our informant states that the whole time, during which he had an uninterrupted view of these strange phenomena, was abore an hour, and that he and those that were with bio were greatly amazed at the wonderful appearance. We give this account as nearly as possible as it was related to us; and no doubt some que may have seen these phenomen, who may be able to give a more scientific description, and perhaps, defink Son of them.22.

Las extrañas travesuras de una luna.
Desde hace algún tiempo, una gran luna verde ha sido visible para los ciudadanos de Greensburg, Ind. Se puede ver entre las 10 y las 12 de la noche y es causa de no poco entusiasmo. Trae a la memoria de los ciudadanos una enorme luna verde de hace varios años, de apariencia similar, que se pudo ver hacia la medianoche colgando aparentemente sobre el aserradero Johnson en la parte sur del elty. El extraño fenómeno se mantuvo colgando de un lado a otro en lo alto del cielo y parecía estar anclado al cobertizo del molino por una gran cuerda iluminada. A Moon’s Strange Antics.
For some time past a large green moon has been visible to the citizers of Greens- burg, Ind. It can be seen between the hours of 10 and 12 at night and is the cause of no little excitement. It brings back to the memory of the citizens a huge green moon several years ago, similar in appearance, which could be seen about midnight hanging apparently over the Johnson sawmill in the south part of the elty. The strange phenomenon kept dan- gling back and forth high in the sky and seemed to be anchored to the millshed by a large illuminated rope. It was mystify- ing to all who saw it, and none dared go near it. Finally two boys, Jack Thomp- son and Willie Turner, who were known for their daring, decided to investigate the matter.
They went together, climbed upon the shed, and at the same time both laid hold of the rope. They fell directly, as if para- lyzed, and were found on the roof uncon- scious the next morning, When they gain- ed consciousness, it was discovered the hair on the right side of Turner’s head, which was naturally black, had turned green, and that on the left side of Thomp- son’s head had turned fiery red. It was hot, and sparks would fly from it when touched. Every 12 hours the color of the hair would change, first Turner’s to red and then Thompson’s to green, then Thompson’s to red and Turner’s to green.
The boys became a wonder to everybody. Scientists from Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Chicago and several other large cities went there and examined the boys and pro- nounced the strange occurrence phenom- enal and something which had never oo- curred before.
But one night an angel of light appear- ed unto the boys and bade them go again to the millshed and touch the rope. They both arose from their beds, and at the same time in their sleep went to the mill, climbed the shed together, and at exactly the same time both took hold of the rope. They instantly awoke and felt very curl- ous and foolish at finding where they were. Upon touching the rope their hair imme- diately changed to its natural color, and they went home sound in both mind and body. Chicago Tribune.
